By declaring on 16 July this year that the Brétignolles-sur-Mer marina project is of public utility, the Vendée regional governor, Mr. Benoit Brocart, gave the go-ahead for a development project that goes to against any environmental logic. The irreversible destruction of ecosystems, an exceptional natural site that is rendered artificial, disruption of local nautical activities, and an incorrect impact study are the main reasons why Surfrider Foundation Europe and several other associations have been arguing against this inappropriate and unnecessary project from the beginning.
However, despite these widely expressed concerns, the regional governor decided to issue an environmental authorisation for the construction of the port, judging that the negative impacts were limited and thus giving way to purely economic interests. Therefore, Surfrider Foundation Europe now intends to go to court to challenge the ecological foundations of this irresponsible decision.
Surfrider Foundation Europe has also published a letter to the Vendée regional governor today. The association hereby reaffirms its firm opposition to the project by insisting particularly on the incoherence of the public authorities in the face of current ecological issues, and the inadequacies of an impact study which has only been conducted superficially.
In order to demonstrate our dissatisfaction regarding the development of the situation, Surfrider Foundation Europe and local partner associations invite all those who oppose this project to meet for the event “Balance ton port” on Sunday October the 6th at 11h, Normandelière beach.
