Monitoring

This scientific programme aims to qualify and quantify the origin of waste in oceans and rivers in order to find concrete and effective solutions to combat its proliferation.

Riverine Input

Non-wanted throw, deliberately thrown by incivility and carried by water streams, an important part of our waste ends up in the oceans. Hence, in 2014 Surfrider Europe launches the project Reverine Input, a scientific program aiming to qualify and quantify the origin of waste inside the oceans and the water streams to find concrete and efficient solutions to fight against their proliferation.

1 MISSION: TO REDUCE THE INPUT OF WASTE INSIDE THE SEAS AND OCEANS

Nearly 700 species are known to be affected by this pollution and some are endangered. Marine plastic pollution is one of the biggest threats to the oceans. Time for action has come!

4 FONDAMENTAL OBJECTIVES

  • Identify the origin of aquatic waste
  • Estimate the quantities getting into the marine environment
  • Participate into the emergence of concrete, efficient and adaptive solutions
  • Sensitize the large public and the decision makers

2 SCIENTIFIC PROTOCOLS

  • Keeping track of beached macro plastics on our coasts: counting and classification
  • Keeping track of microplastics inside water and sediments

Surfrider Foundation Europe, member of the OSPAR Convention

The Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic.

Created by the Oslo and Paris conventions in 1992 and adopted by 15 European countries, the OSPAR convention is in charge of maintaining a protection of the marine environment in the North-East Atlantic. The objectives of this union are both a prevention and a suppression of pollutions, an evaluation of the marine environment quality and a conservation of ecosystems in maritime zones.

As member, Surfrider Europe must maintain a regular follow-up of the quantities of waste present on the beaches of Anglet on a defined sector. These samples are collected every four months in order to be quantified and qualified after.
