Gruissan, France

The town council decided to withdraw all bins from the beach. By way of explanation, they claimed that under the Blue Flag scheme, no bins should be placed directly on the beach, but at a 50 m distance.

The Keeper and other volunteers, worried that the withdrawal of bins would invite tourists to drop their litter directly onto the beach, told the council that it was necessary to make holiday-makers aware of the situation throughout the day.

The town council quickly realised their mistake and agreed to replace the bins along the beach path on the side facing the road.
