Gironde, France

29/05/08

A project under construction of an LNG import terminal in the Gironde estuary (at Le Verdon) would affect the man-made lake where nautical activities are being practiced (optimist and kite surf).

4Gas – an operator of natural gas terminals – signed a contract with Port of Bordeaux for a 20-hectare land reservation at Le Verdon for the construction of an LNG import terminal. Once again, this project named “Pegaz” does not have unanimous support. First of all, if one takes into account all the existing terminals and the ones in progress, France will produce twice as much as it needs. Second of all, this project will impact the environment and cause major risks. Therefore, Surfrider followed up the evolution of this project and we took advantage of our reputation to support another association “Une pointe pour tous”. This foundation aims at protecting inhabitants, companies and environment for a controlled and sustainable development of the Medoc headland.

Thanks to a great mobilization, the project was eventually refused by the Prefect because of its illegality regarding the "Coastline law".
