Cape Sperone (Corsica), France

Illegal alignment of the coastal path at Sperone Golf Course.

Public access to Cape Sperone has been prohibited by the company which owns Sperone Golf Club with its 18 hole course at Cape Sperone (South Corsica) as well as a housing complex. They consequently built a coastal path to suit their requirements.

The legal easement provides for the path to run along the cliff, but the actual alignment was moved further inland so that walkers would not disturb the green. Surfrider has associated with the complaint lodged by the associations ABCDE and U Levante, which demand that the original alignment of the coastal path along Cap Sperone is respected.

The verdict is pronounced by the Administrative Court of Bastia on the 4th of May 2010, and the associations' complaint is rejected on the grounds of the danger associated with the maintenance of the coastal path along the cliff.

Finally, in October 2013, the Administrative court of appeal of Marseille ruled against the Decree of March 10th 2009 of the Prefect of the Southern part of Corsica. This action has been made in particular by the initiative of U-Levante, partner association on this fight. Thus it is a victory, the golfers will have to give up a little bit of their "green" to leave in free access the littoral path.
