Bonifacio (Corsica), France

Several coastal development projects were launched on the back of the Sustainable Urban Development Plan for Corsica. Unfortunately, certain towns have their own way of interpreting this piece of legislation, and they prefer to contribute to coastal artificialisation. This was the case in Bonifacio, where a new golf course was built and five separate areas have been turned into buildable zones.

In cooperation with two Corsican associations, U-Levante and ABCDetc, we took legal action. Furthermore, a gathering was held in which participants asked for the Corsican coastal heritage to be respected and for the law on Coastlines (‘loi Littoral') to be complied with.

In May 2010, the Administrative Appeal Court of Marseille annulled certain clauses of the Local Development Plan. In April 2012, the Administrative Court in Bastia found the mayor of Bonifacio guilty for having ‘forgotten' to apply for a construction permit for an aparthotel with 54 units in an area of outstanding beauty in Rondinara.
