Earth Day: a petition to protect 30% of the world's oceans by 2030
On the occasion of Earth Day 2021, a global environmental event organized every year since 1970, Surfrider Europe supports the "We are One Ocean" campaign led by the World Surf League PURE. Through this participation, the NGO wishes to complement its daily actions and remind public authorities of the urgency to act internationally to protect our Ocean.
Earth Day: a global environmental event
This Thursday, April 22, 2021 marks the return of Earth Day! This movement seeks, through the organization of campaigns and thousands of gatherings around the world, to support citizens and organizations in reducing their environmental impact. Considered today as the most important participative environmental event on the planet, it gathers, each year, more than one billion people, from 193 different countries, eager to take action for the climate.
Surfrider Europe intègre la campagne mondiale “We are One Ocean”
As an environmental NGO, Surfrider Europe has decided to take action on this special day. This April 22, 2021, the association reinforces its commitment within the global campaign "We are One Ocean". Led by the World Surf League PURE and supported by many partners such as Surfrider Foundation US and Save The Waves, it advocates for the protection of at least 30% of the oceans by 2030 through the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
Faced with the acceleration of the effects of climate change, scientists assure that the preservation of life on Earth and the proper functioning of ecosystems will not be possible without the creation of fully protected natural areas in the ocean. Thus, the establishment of MPAs would allow the ocean to truly recover: maintaining the diversity of marine flora and fauna; improving the resistance of aquatic ecosystems to the impacts of climate change, pollution and overfishing; more sustainable maritime human activities. The benefits of MPAs are numerous; it is necessary to urge world leaders to act in favor of their creation.
Sign the petition "We Are One Ocean" and support the actions carried out daily by Surfrider Europe
To do this, "We Are One Ocean" encourages citizens and organizations to sign a petition to adopt an international treaty on this subject at the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity in 2021. The implementation of new legal tools seems indeed essential to firmly regulate human activities on international waters and thus protect 30% of the world's oceans by 2030.
This collective petition is therefore a real way to reinforce the demands publicly expressed by Surfrider Europe, within its Ocean Call, and to complete its daily actions for the safeguard of natural marine areas. Among them, the NGO has been very active in recent months in its fight against offshore drilling: victories of Coastal Defenders in Spain against oil exploration, awareness of citizens and questioning of EU members of parliament in the context of the campaign #DrillingIsKilling ... With "We are One Ocean", its fight continues outside European borders, and you can contribute to its success.
